'Absinthe A5' Brings First Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2

Noted iOS jailbreak author pod2g has teamed up with the Chronic Dev Team to release "Absinthe A5", an enhancement to the popular Greenpois0n jailbreaking tool which adds the ability to perform an untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 for the first time.

A related effort from the iPhone Dev Team will include a command-line tool for more control over the jailbreaking process and to assist with diagnosis and repair. Absinthe is currently available only for Mac OS X, although versions for Windows and Linux are set to follow shortly.

Jailbreaking is the process by which users can open up their iOS device systems to load third-party software and hacks not authorized by Apple. Procedures for jailbreaking iOS devices are typically divided into two categories: "tethered" tools that required the device to be connected to a computer each time it is booted, and "untethered" tools that allow the device to be booted independently.

Untethered jailbreaks are obviously the more highly desired of the two forms, and Absinthe represents the first of these untethered jailbreaking tools for iOS devices such as the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 that run Apple's A5 system-on-a-chip.

Device and iOS version combinations that can be jailbroken using Absinthe include the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 (9A334) and 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406) and all models of the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 (9A405).

Apple warns that jailbreaking can void a device's warranty, and users should be aware of the potential implications of jailbreaking their devices, but most issues can be resolved using common jailbreak tools and devices can be reverted to their non-jailbroken states if necessary.

Update: The Greenpois0n site is currently seeing intermittent availability issues undoubtedly related to high traffic coming from the new release.

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Available for Non A5-Devices

Dev-Team and Chronic Dev Team have released an untethered 5.0.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices. Developed by @pod2g, the new jailbreak is now available:

"A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three)."

Detailed instructions are available on each respective site. The new jailbreak is only available to devices prior to the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S which both use the A5 processor. Jailbreaks for those devices are still pending.

This is also the first "untethered" 5.0.1 jailbreak which allows the jailbreak to remain active without having to reconnect to a computer upon reboot.

Further discussions here, in the comments area and in the MacRumors forums and discussion thread.

Facebook Launches Standalone Messenger App for iPhone and iPad

Facebook has released Facebook Messenger, an iPhone app focused on chat and messaging. The dedicated app allows users to send messages directly to friends whether they are on phones or using the Facebook website.

"Messenger is a separate app, so it only takes one click to get to your messages or send a new one. Messages are delivered through notifications and texts, so your friends are more likely to get them right away.

You can use Messenger to reach all of your friends -- whether they're on Facebook or in your phone contacts. All you have to do is type the person's name."

The app is integrated with the Facebook messaging and chat service and all conversations are archived as part of ongoing conversations on Facebook. The app allows users to share their location and attach photos to conversations. Users aren't restricted to chatting with one friend either, group conversations are easily created as well.

Facebook Messenger is a direct challenge to other messaging services like BlackBerry Messenger and Apple's forthcoming iMessage. Like those products, Facebook Messenger uses data, not text messages to communicate, which means the service isn't restricted by per-message charges or separate mobile phone charges.

Facebook Messenger is a universal app available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, free from the App Store.

GV Integrated Jailbreak Tweak Bakes Google Voice In Your iPhone

Most of rely on Google Voice for our communication needs. However, that complicates for us if we use an iPhone, as the same level of integration that is given on the Android platform, is not present on the iPhone. Now GVIntegrated, a jailbreak tweak integrates Google Voice on the iPhone, like its meant to be.

Also allows users to specify default call rules and per-contact rules!"

No new icons are added to the Home screen of your iPhone. You can configure the various options of GVIntegrated from the Settings.app.

Obviously, to install GVIntegrated, you need to have a jailbroken device. Follow our tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone using redsn0w.

Save iOS 4.3.5 SHSH iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Blobs and Update iPhone 4 Baseband

TinyUmbrella for both Windows and Mac has been updated to version 5.00.07 to support save iOS 4.3.5 SHSH blobs for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This will help you to save SHSH certificates for iOS 4.3.5 as well as update iPhone 4 baseband. This is the first time updating iPhone 4 baseband functionality has been enabled in TinyUmbrella.

The iPhone 4 baseband update option should only be used by those who know what they are doing. If you are on a software unlocked iPhone, you should definitely not play with this setting. Anyhow, before you do proceed, take notice of the following:

  1. First, the version you WANT to restore to and the version Apple is currently signing must BOTH have the same baseband. This is important or else the baseband update will not work and you will get a 10xx error and need to use fixrecovery. (Works for iPhone 4 - will not work for iPad 2)
  2. Second, you need to realize that checking the box WILL UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND.
You have to manually select update iPhone 4 baseband option whenever you start TinyUmbrella. It will never be on by default.

As a reminder, to save your SHSH blobs, simply connect your iDevice via USB to your computer, launch TinyUmbrella, and click the “Save SHSH” button.

Jailbreak 4.3.5 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad with Redsn0w

As you know that Apple has released iOS 4.3.5 to fix security issue. The good news is that some guys have confirmed that current Redsn0w version can jailbreak 4.3.5 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad 1.

As we reported you that this jailbreak is still tethered jailbreak which means that you will need to reconnect your iDevice with computer every time your reboot iDevice.

Jailbreak 4.3.5 iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad:

Step 1: Download iOS 4.3.5 and iOS 4.3.4 (required by this version of Redsn0w) firmware file for your device from the links given at the end.

Step 2: Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 for Windows or Mac. Also make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes, which is version 10.4.

Step 3: Now start Redsn0w, browse for the iOS 4.3.4 firmware file (NOT the 4.3.5) that you downloaded in Step 1 and point it towards Redsn0w. Refer to the screenshots below:

Step 4: Once Redsn0w is done recognizing the firmware file, click Next and there you’ll be taken to a new window. Simply check the “Install Cydia” box as shown below and leave other options as it is for now. Once done, click Next.

Step 5: On this screen, Redsn0w will instruct you to power down your device and plug it in to your computer. Follow the onscreen instructions and then click Next to continue.

Step 6: On this screen you will have to put your device in DFU mode with a combination of the Power button and the Home button for a certain amount of time, simply follow the onscreen instructions on how to do so. The combination is usually like this:
  • Hold down Power button for 5 seconds.
  • Now without releasing the Power button, hold down the Home button simultaneously with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Let go of the Power button but keep on holding the Home button for another 15 seconds.
If you performed the above mentioned steps correctly, then your device should be in DFU mode.

Step 7: Redsn0w will now jailbreak your device, don’t do anything weird at this point, just let Redsn0w finish. We would recommend that you don’t do anything with your PC or Mac at all during the process. Sitting idle and waiting for the process to end on its own is much advised.

Since this is a tethered jailbreak, therefore whenever your iOS device loses power, it will go into the dreaded Apple logo boot screen loop. To get out of that, simply start from Step 3 again and in Step 4, uncheck “Install Cydia” and instead check “Just boot tethered right now” option and hit “Next” with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch connected to your PC or Mac. And yes, you will have to do this every time when your device reboots or loses power.
That’s it! You should now have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.3.5.
